The 2009 La Granja 360 Syrah is a Trader Joe’s $3.99 wine, this time it is from the Carinena region of Aragon in Northern Spain. La Granja 360 translates to “The Farm 360” and these wines are intended to be simply made, everyday, inexpensive, young wines. Made by the San Nicolas Tolentino winery using 100% Syrah grapes, the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks. The alcohol content is 13.5%.
A very dark opaque black cherry red. The nose is blueberry, a light herbal note and a touch of barnyard. Medium bodied, slightly watery, the initial flavor is a blackberry, lean not juicy. Not a complicated wine, some blackberry, cassis and a touch of spice comes in on the mid-palate, but it is a full flavored wine. The finish tastes the same as the main body of the wine and is a respectable length.
The LaGranja 360 Syrah is a simple everyday wine, not a “fruit bomb,” but lean with pure fruit flavor and decent acidity. For an extra buck, it is light years ahead of wines like 2 Buck Chuck.
