Barone Fini Valdadige Pinot Grigio 2013

BF_PinotGrigio_NV_750ml_BTLThe Barone Fini Valdadige Pinot Grigio 2013 is a DOC wine sourced from the Valdadige district of the Trentno-Alto Adige region of northern Italy. A rough translation of Valdadige is the valley of Adige and Alto Adige is the heights of Adige, The Barone and the Fini families founded the winery in 1497 and their direct descendents still manage the winery. The Valdadige region has farmed grapes continuously since the Roman times and the Barone Fini Winery is built on the ruins of an ancient Roman winery. The Barone Fine Pinot Grigio vines are a mature 25 to 30 years old and the wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel vats. The alcohol content is 12.5%.

The color is a pale lemon yellow. The nose is delicate, but full, melon, lemon, flowers, grapefruit and a hint of pineapple. The Barone Fini is dry, crisp, with a firm mouth-feel and fresh flavors. It starts with a mix of apple and tart grapefruit, a hit of lime, lemon and melon. The mid-palate adds peach, faint herbs and a brush of minerality. The acidity puts a bright, fresh shine on this Pinot Grigio. The finish is  mainly the apple, peach and a little citrus, with a sharp dash of acidity and is quite lengthy.

The Barone Fini Valdadige Pinot Grigio 2013 is definitely not flavored challenged, while nicely nuanced, it is not shy. A check of the web showed an average price of $11, which is well priced for a medium to light bodied, dry white wine that can be paired with seafood prepared simply, cold shrimp salad or pasta in a light sauce, while drinking well on a Wednesday evening.  I tend to think of Pinot Grigio as a warm weather wine, while it does have a bright sunny feel to it, the Barone Fini has enough weight behind it, to fit in during the winter months. Maybe a bright and sunny Italian wine is good medicine on a snowy winters day.
