coppola-Diamond_sauvblancThe Coppola Diamond Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2013 is 90.6% Sauvignon Blanc, 6% Chardonnay and 3.5% Semillon (Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are the White wine blend of Bordeaux) sourced from vineyards in the Alexander Valley AVA and Sonoma County AVA, both sub-AVA’s of the Sonoma County AVA and the Lake County AVA (north of Napa). The 2013 vintage started to see the effects of the drought in CaliforniaNorthern California, though fairly dry, had cooler weather throughout the growing season, so the grapes did well. Too much rain is not good for grapes, rain at harvest can be a disaster, the vines do not need a a great deal of rain, but the current drought can cause major damage in the near future. This Sauv Blanc was fermented and aged in stain-less steel tanks, no oak was used. The alcohol content is 13%.

The color is a pale lager beer yellow. The nose is one of the things that is great about the Sauvignon Blanc grape, there is an abundance of fresh tropical fruit, peach, pear, grapefruit and a bouquet of flowers. This is a bright, crisp, lively Sauv Blanc, with an attractive slap of minerality. It tastes of lemon, grapefruit, melon, Bosc pear, kiwi, lime and a hint of peach. The mid-palate shows the brush of minerality and some tart green apple. The acidity is well-balanced, it will pair with seafood (especially shrimp or crab) and fancy salads and still drink very well. The finish is full and long, it takes a long time to fade.

The 2013 Coppola Diamond Series Sauvignon Blanc is a well-made, very tasty, versatile, inexpensive (you should be able to find it for around a couple of bucks either side of ten bucks), everyday wine. It does everything you want a Sauvignon Blanc to do, it has a lovely fruit and citrus nose, there is pleasing crispness that refreshes the palate and it has personality, the minerality and the tart mid-palate offer an excellent counter-balance to the splash of fruit and citrus upfront. If you like your Sauv Blanc tart and crisp and full flavored, then the Coppola Diamond Series is for you.

Great grape news! Love your concept. I see you review a lot of the Coppola Wines. Do you find them to be your favorites?

I think Coppola wines take value priced wines seriously. They are very solid examples of the varietal with a bit of sense of place. We don’t solicit wine samples, but we are on Coppola’s media sample list. So we have posted most of their wines in our price range. So while we do feature more wines from one producer than we normally would, we are always happy to sample them and write about them.
