Casa Gualda Tempranillo 2013

casagualdatempranillo2013The 2013 Casa Gualda Tempranillo is 90% Tempranillo, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot sourced from vineyards in the Castilla-LaMancha DOP of central Spain. Spanish Red wines are classified by how long they are aged, the Casa Gualda is a Joven or young wine, which means it has little or no aging, if you see a Red wine with last years date on the label it’s a joven wine. Other Red wine classifications are, Crianza which is aged for 2 years with at least 6 months in oak barrels, Reserva is aged 3 years with at least 1 year in oak barrels and Gran Reserva is aged for 5 years with at least 3 years in the bottle and a minimum of 1 1/2 years in oak. The price tends to go up as the aging gets longer, but with Spanish wine it does not always cost as much as you might think. The alcohol content of the Casa Gualda is 13%.

The color is a rich dark purple. The nose is light, a little red fruit and a nice whiff of slate. This is a well-balanced wine with sleek acidity. It tastes of red fruit, strawberry and cherry with a nice mineral edge. The tannins are smooth and the body of this wine is long and lean. The finish is subdued, but of decent length.

The 2013 Casa Gualda Tempranillo is a solid, honest bottle of wine. This is the kind of wine that you will see on dinner tables all over Spain. As for pairing, the Casa Gualda will work with fried chicken, pork chops and deep dish pizza.
