2013marquesdecatillaairenThe 2012 Marques de Castilla  Blanco Airén is sourced from vineyards in the Castilla LaMancha DOP of central Spain. The Airén grape is the most widely grown White grape in the world, it had been until recently, the most widely grown grape, both Red and White. Yet, most people have never heard of the Airén grape, much less sampled an Airén wine. The reason is that Airén is almost exclusively planted (620,000 acres) in Spain and most of that is in La Mancha. The Marques de Castilla  Blanco Airén is a young wine, this indicates that it was bottled right after fermentation was completed and should be consumed within 2 years of release. The alcohol content is 11.5%.

The color is almost clear, with just a hint of golden-yellow. The nose is banana Laffy Taffy and dried pineapple slices. For a young wine it has a decent amount of body and a bit of heft to the flavors. It tastes of pear and melon mixed with lime. The acidity is well balanced, enough to help the wine work well with food, but not too much, so it drinks very easily. The finish is crisp, clean and fairly lengthy.

The 2013 Marques de Castilla Blanco Airén is one of those “Summertime in a bottle” wines. Refreshing and tasty, with a wonderful Laffy Taffy nose, this is a very easy to like wine. It should sell for under $10, this very different, but still very approachable White wine is a steal.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
