starboroughsauvblanc2012The 2012 Starborough Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from several vineyards in the Marlborough region located at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. Starborough is one of E & J Gallo’s import brands, the Starborough winery usually produces single vineyard wines and this is their entry-level offering featuring grapes from several parts of Marlborough. The wine industry in Marlborough is fairly new, they started producing Sauvignon Blanc in the mid 70s. This wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks and the alcohol content is 12.5%. The Starborough can be found almost anywhere for around $10, I have seen it as high as $15 on the web and under $7 at Costco.

The color is pale wheat yellow, clean and shiny. This is one of those wines where the aromas hit you from 3 feet away, the nose is grassy with scents of lemon, melon, pineapple and pear. The 2012 Starborough Sauv Blanc is clean and crisp, in the winter it tastes of a bit of summer and in the summer it is an adult cooler. It tastes of melon, lemon, guava and ripe peach. The mid palate shows a light touch of minerality, lime and tangerine. This Sauvignon Blanc has a solid amount of acidity that contributes to the overall crisp, clean nature of this wine. The finish is subdued, but lengthy.

The Starborough Sauvignon Blanc is a mass-produced wine, you can find it at almost any supermarket, Target and Costco, along with many other stores. For a mass-produced wine it is very well-balanced, with clean fresh flavors and a very crisp acidity, in other words a very nice New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The flavors are fairly light and delicate, but the acidity will help this Sauv Blanc stand up to fairly spicy foods, just as long as the flavors of the dish are not too overpowering. Me?, I’ll skip the food, I like my Sauvignon Blanc straight up, well chilled.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
