SOFOSRed2010The 2010 SOFOS (wise old man) Greek Red Wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Agiorgitiko (one of the top 2 Red wine grapes in Greece) grown in two certified organic vineyards near the town of Klementi in Corinth on the Peloponnese peninsula. This Red wine is produced by Domaine Gioulis, a family owned winery that has been certified organic since 1994 and recently became the first Greek winery to be certified Non-Gmo (genetically modified organism). Greek wine has a history going back thousands of years and Agiorgitiko is a grape native to Corinth. This Red blend is aged in French oak casks for 6 months and then aged an additional 20 months in stainless steel tanks. The alcohol content is a mild 12% and this wine lists for $11.99 which is not bad for a Red aged for 26 months.

The color is a dark, barely see-thru blood plasma red with black highlights. The nose is ripe blackberry and cherry, with spring flowers, milk chocolate and green spice drop gel candy. This is a blend with a lot of flavor and personality, along with a good bit of structure. It tastes of extracted blackberry, black cherry, oak spices, a little creme brulee and grape juice. The mid palate shows a slap from the tannins, along with raspberry and astringent tea. The SOFOS Red has a lot going on in your glass. This is a well balanced wine, with a really nice tannin structure. The finish is fresh fruit and tea and while subdued, lasts for a very long time.

One of the benefits to drinking a wine made from the Agiorgitiko grape is there are pretty good odds that you have not had another one recently. The SOFOS Greek Red does an excellent job of blending Old World structure with New World fruit forward flavors. A medium bodied, lower alcohol wine, but the rich, bold flavors give the impression the wine is bigger than it actually is. The SOFOS is a versatile wine, bright fresh flavors that are very approachable and easy to drink and more than enough structure for gourmet burgers or spicy fried chicken.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
