The 2013 SOFOS (translates to The Wise Old Man) Greek White Wine is a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Moschofilero (a local indigenous grape) produced by the Gioulis Estate, a small boutique winery, located in a mountainous area of Corinth on the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. This is a certified organic wine along with being a certified Non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) verified  wine. The Greeks have been producing wine for 6,500 years, but in recent years have kept their wine for themselves and didn’t put much effort into the export market. With the recent financial problems in Greece, there has been a greater need to sell their wines abroad, so be prepared to see more Greek wines on the store shelves. The alcohol content is 12%. Serve chilled.

The color is a bright golden yellow, clear and shiny. This is one of those wines that you can smell very distinctly from several feet away. The nose is peach, apricot, floral bouquet and lemon. The nose gives the impression that this might be a slightly sweet wine, but it is dry and lean. It starts with peach and pear along with some juicy apple followed by a well balanced brush of minerality. The mid palate brings in dried pineapple and dried apricot, along with a late splash of refreshing lime. The acidity is well balanced and shows up on the finish to help the soft delicate flavors linger.

CheapWineFinder.com has 1,275 wine posts in our archives and this is our first Greek wine. I really did not know what to expect, but the SOFOS Greek White Wine is a delicate, delicious, summer wine. It is a White wine that is light bodied enough to act as a refreshing cooler on a hot summers day and has enough flavor to pair well with fish, seafood and maybe some mildly spicy Asian food. The 2013 SOFOS White is a highly enjoyable bottle of wine with flavor, balance and a good bit of length.
