vilalva2010douroThe 2010 Vilalva Douro Reserva Red Blend is a $6.99 ALDI’s import exclusive, made for them by Enoport United Wines from grapes grown in the Douro DOC of Portugal. This is a DOC wine which is Portugal’s highest quality classification. Portuguese wines use indigenous grapes, you will not find Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, but you will see Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz (also known as Tempranillo) and Touriga National. The Douro region has been producing wine since Roman times and is also known for its Port fortified wine. ALDI’s does not give out information on its wine, Enoport United produces their own Douro Reserva that is 100% Touriga National, that wine is also a Reserva and is aged in French oak for 9 months. The alcohol content is 13.5% and the 2009 vintage received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast.

The color is a seriously dark blood plasma red. The nose is raspberry and cherry, with oak spice and vanilla. This is a full bodied Red, that has bright, fresh fruit flavors mixed with vanilla and a light touch of spice. It starts with raspberry and strawberry (lean, not jammy), oak spice, tea and a hint of creamy vanilla. The mid palate adds a slightly rough edge from the tannins (just enough to let you know they are there) and black cherry. This Red blend has really nice balance, the fruit, the secondary flavors, the oak, the tannins and the acidity get along very well together. The finish is subdued, but lasts a reasonable length of time.

The ALDI’s 2010 Vilalva Douro DOC Reserva is a very solid, tasty, well made Red blend, don’t be put off by the $6.99 price tag, this is a quality wine. Be sure you let the bottle breathe for an hour or so to let the flavors integrate themselves, because a well balanced wine will not show well when it is a bit “tight”. If you have not experienced many Portuguese Red wines, the Vilalva is a very inexpensive, but very representative of the quality wines from Portugal.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.

I went to Aldi in Tampa and in Bradenton, Florida. Neither store had Vilalva Douro Reserva. When can I find this wine near Tampa?
