The Scarpetta Timido Vino Spumante Brut Rose’ 3rd Edition is 60% Franconia (also known as Limberger) and 40% Pinot Nero (Italy’s version of Pinot Noir) sourced from a vineyard in the Colli Orientali del Friuli sub region of the Friuli Venezia Giulia grape growing region of Italy. Scarpetta translates to taking a piece of bread and mopping up the last remaining sauce on your plate and Timido translates to shy or blushing, which may be a play on words since this is a Rose’. Scarpetta is a project put together by Bobby Stuckey, the owner and Wine Director and Lachlan MacKinnon-Patterson, owner and Chef, of Frasca Restaurant in Boulder, Co. The both met while working at Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Napa. The concept behind Frasca Restaurant is the food and culture of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Spumante is the Italian generic word for Bubbly and the Scarpetta Timido Brut Rose’ is produced with the Charmat Method (the same way Prosecco is produced), where the bubbles are added in large pressurized stainless steel vats. Brut indicates that this is a dry or not sweet wine and the alcohol content is 12%.
The color is baby doll pink with a slightly orange hue. The nose is clean and floral with a dash of strawberry and a light honeyed scent. This is a bright, crisp Bubbly, with flavors of cherry and strawberry, soft dose of minerality and a late brush of herbs. The bubbles a soft and delicate, they bring the flavor to your tastebuds then disappear. The acidity is very well balanced, it puts a shine on the flavors, but always stays in check. The finish is very crisp, very clean and very long.
The Scarpetta Timido Brut Rose’ is a wonderful little glass of Bubbles, they only made 800 cases, so if you see it on the store shelves or on a wine list, grab it before its gone. A well crafted, unique Spumante, you are not going to find too many Bubbly’s in your local wine shop that taste and feel exactly the way the Scarpetta does. Spumante sometimes has bad connotations, but the Scarpetta gives Spumante a good name.
