Cul-De-Sac Chardonnay

culdesacchard2The Cul-De-Sac Chardonnay is a supermarket wine. In the Midwest it is sold by the Roundy’s chain, Mariano’s Fresh Market is their Chicago store, where it retails for $4, in Texas the Cul-De-Sac wines are carried by the H E B chain, there are probably others. The Cul-De-Sac Wine Company is a project put together by Concannon Wines to help these supermarkets compete with 2 Buck Chuck. This is a non vintage Chardonnay, meaning grapes grown in more than one season are included in the bottle and this is designated an American wine, indicating grapes grown in more than one State where used. You tend to see non-vintage, multi-state wines, when the wine has to be produced to a particular price point and be made in large quantities, you can’t always get what you need in the current vintage. The supermarket website mentioned that this Chardonnay is lightly oaked and the alcohol content is 12%.

The color is extra virgin olive oil yellow. The nose is apples and lemon/lime, followed by a little pineapple and pear. This isn’t the most complex Chardonnay in the world, it starts with apple juice mixed with lemon, then some muted slightly tart grapefruit and it finishes with fresh lime and a slight apple core flavor. The acidity helps keep the wine crisp and reasonably refreshing. The finish a subdued and lasts a decent length of time.

It used to be finding a drinkable 4 buck wine was like finding a needle in a haystack, but today there are more than a few very decent, around $5 Chardonnay on the shelves. The Cul-De-Sac Chardonnay is very drinkable, if not exactly a tasty wine and I prefer it to 2 Buck Chuck Chardonnay. It is just that for 2 or 3 dollars more, there is better Chardonnay to be had.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
