The Heavyweight Chardonnay 2009

The  Heavyweight Chardonnay  2009shot_1349117905187 is 85% Chardonnay, 10% Chenin Blanc and 5% Marsanne sourced from vineyards in more than one California grape growing AVA. The Heavyweight is produced by ADS Wines which is owned by Scotto Family Wines a 5th generation winemaker located in the Lodi AVA. They do not provide a wealth of technical details on the making of this Chardonnay, but they do mention “a delicate touch of tasty oak.” In the past, some California Chardonnay’s had a bit of a heavy hand when it came to oak in the flavor profile. On the other hand, unoaked Chardonnay can be too tart, too citrusy, so judicious use of oak tends to be the happy medium. The alcohol content is 12.5%.

The color is lite beer yellow. There is a citrus and honey nose with a floral edge. It tastes of melon and tart lemony citrus, a nice ying/yang of flavors. The mid palate adds a nice splash of apricot, pineapple with a wisp of vanilla. The overall effect is a light refreshing Chardonnay with balanced acidity and a long delicate finish.

The 2009 The Heavyweight Chardonnay ain’t too heavy, it is crisp, refreshing and balanced Chard, with an appealing mix of flavors. It should be available in the stores from about $14 to just under $10, depending on what’s on sale.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
