Chandon Limited Edition American Summer Brut Classic

limited-edition-chandon-brut-classic-for-fourth-of-julyThe Chandon Limited Edition Brut Classic, subtitled American Summer, is the usual Chandon Brut Classic, but in a bottle covered in very eye catching  red, white and blue foil (there are stripes of American flag blue, French flag blue and summertime sky blue). The Chandon Brut Classic is made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir  and Pinot Muenier grown in 25 different vineyards located in more than one California grape growing AVA. All Champagne style wines go thru 2 fermentations, once like all wines and then the wine is bottled and before it is temporarily corked, they add a measured amount of yeast and sugar to each and every bottle and the 2nd fermentation occurs inside each individual bottle. The Brut Classic (this is the basic Chandon Sparkling wine line) contains 10% to 20% Reserve grapes, depending on the vintage and is aged in the bottle for a minimum of 12 months. The alcohol content is 13%. Wine Spectator gave the Brut Classic  89 points and Wine Enthusiast gave it 90 points.

The color is a pale wheat yellow with a battalion of tiny bubbles. The nose is soft lemon, fresh lime, bread baking in the oven and juicy freshly cut apples. Light, balanced, crisp and refreshing with very balanced acidity. It tastes of lemon/lime, a faint hint of caramel, green apple and Anjou pear. The mid palate adds a touch of yeasty bakery bread and lemon peel. The acidity is very balanced, giving the Brut Classic the feel of a much more expensive wine. The finish is strong and long.

This is the wine that should be in your glass as you watch the fireworks this 4th of July, proud, kick-ass, All American Bubbly. It took the Judgement in Paris in 1976 for Americans to realize that California Cabernet  Sauvignon and Chardonnay were World Class wines, it is about time we give American Sparkling wine its due. It is not that French Champagne has fallen in quality, it is absolutely remarkable stuff, it is just that American Sparkling wine is damn good.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
