2011 Bota Box Pinot Grigio Tetra Pak

76567The 2011 Bota Box Pinot Grigio comes in a 500 ml (glass bottles are 750 ml) Tetra Pak, light weight and recyclable. The Tetra Pak is made from paper, soy ink is used, the whole earth friendly thing. It also fits into a coat pocket, purse or backpack with ease and it holds 3 good size glasses of wine. The Pinot Grigio is sourced from vineyards in California and Bota Box is made by DFV Wines who also produce Gnarly Head, Brazin and Twisted wines, along with several other brands, so the wine inside this cool little Pak should be pretty good. I know some people are still having a hard time getting used to screw caps on bottles, so a paper 2/3 size Tetra Pak might give you some pause, but the shape and size of this Pak can be extremely useful. The alcohol content is 13%.

The color is extra virgin olive oil yellow. The nose is very supple, grapefruit, pineapple, orange blossom honey and lime from a gin and tonic. This Pinot Grigio has a slightly oily mouthfeel and shows very balanced acidity compared to some more expensive Pinot Grigio’s from Italy. It tastes of lemon and lime, a touch of peach, a nice slap of minerality and a parting shot of orange SweeTarts. The acidity helps the finish sizzle for a decent length of time.

These little 500 ml Bota Box Pinot Grigio Tetra Paks sell for $4.99 in the Chicago area and they are the perfect wine to take to Ravenna for a concert on the lawn. Easy to carry, a solid Pinot Grigio inside the Pak and when you are finished toss it in the recycling. Bottles have romance and tradition, Tetra Paks have practicality and ease and the Pinot Grigio does not care if it is poured from a bottle or a Pak.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
