2009 Castello del Poggio Barbera d’ Asti

4156-detailThe 2009 Castello del Poggio Barbera d’ Asti is sourced from Estate vineyards located near the town of Asti in the Piedmont Province of Northern Italy. The Castello (Castle) del Poggio has been a grape growing Estate sine the 1500’s. but over time the property of subdivided and sold off. Zonin Family Estates acquired all the various plots of land and restored the Estate. This Barbera is classified as a DOCG wine, the highest Italian wine classification, with the most rules and regulations. Barbera is the 3rd most planted red grape in Italy. This wine was aged in small French oak barrels for 8 months, then aged another 4 months in the bottle. The alcohol content is 13%.

The color is a bright, shiny, see-thru strawberry red. The nose is raspberry, vanilla, menthol and spearmint chewing gum. It starts out with tart bright cherry which is balanced by softer red plums, a jolt of cassis, then faint licorice. The mid palate brings orange zest and creamy vanilla, sort of a dreamsicle affect, with a late hit of spice. There is plenty of bright balanced acidity, this is very much a food wine and the tannins are soft and smooth. The finish lasts a decent amount of time.

The Castello del Poggio Barbera d Asti is an Estate wine, sourced from one of Italy’s best regions for growing Barbera grapes, made by people who know the land and how to produce Barbera and it sells on line for an average of $14, that’s a pretty solid deal. The flavors jump out of the glass, this is a bottle of wine that grabs your attention.
