The Albero Cava Brut is a $7.99 Trader Joe’s exclusive, sourced from certified organic grapes (CCPAE SPAIN) grown on the Estate vineyards of Bogedas Iranzo (Spain’s oldest Estate vineyards, founded 1335) which is located in the Penedes DO near Barcelona by the Mediterranean Sea. The grapes used, Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo are the traditional grapes that go into Cava. The Champenoise Method is used to produce the Cava, which indicates that the second fermentation occurs in the bottle (like Champagne) and was aged in the bottle for 9 months. The alcohol content is 11.5%.
The bubbles are plentiful, but fade quickly and the Cava is a very pale butter yellow. The nose is the faint aroma of baking bread and sliced apples. The bubbles are soft on the palate and it tastes of lemon and yeasty bread, there are nice, sharp concentrated, but delicate flavors. The mid-palate transitions to tart apple and lime. There is a light citrus finish,where the citrus fades and the acidity lingers.
The Albero Cava Brut is a solid bottle of Bubbly, it has more sharp citrus flavors than yeasty, bready flavors, but it is crisp and refreshing. Good, inexpensive Cava is fairly easy to find, so at 8 bucks the Albero Cava Brut is not an out and out bargain. But with that said, a certified organic, Estate grown Cava thats sells for $7.99 is pretty cool.
