2009 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages

The 2009 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages is 100% Gamay sourced from the Beaujolais AOC of Burgundy, France. The 2009 vintage is said to be the best vintage for Beaujolais in the last 50 years. There are different classifications of Beaujolais, the first is labeled Beaujolais and is sourced from all over the AOC. The second classification is Beaujolais-Villages which is sourced from 39 villages that are known to produce superior wines. Then there is Cru Beaujolais, which is sourced from the 10 best villages, the grapes are grown near one of the villages, but are not sourced from a single vineyard. The Gamay grape is related to the Pinot Noir grape and has some similar characteristics. This is a young fresh wine and is not aged in oak barrels. The alcohol content is 13%.

The color is strawberry jelly red, shiny and rich. The nose is strawberry jam and extracted blueberry. Light to medium boded and definitely a dry wine. The flavor is delicate raspberry, light licorice, with the mid-palate bringing cherry and a slight touch of earthiness. No tannins to speak of and the acidity is well balanced with the body of the wine. The finish is subdued, but you can sense it, more than taste it, for a long, long time.

The Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages is a first class, ten buck (and probably under $10), summertime, cooking outside wine. A classic French Beaujolais that is designed to paired with food, it is a red wine, but is light and delicate enough to go with recipes that you would normally pair with white wine.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
