Roccafiore Prova D’Autore 2012

schedavino_prova_autoreThe Roccafiore Prova D’Autore 2012 is 40% Sagrantino, 30% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese sourced from Cantina Roccafiore certified organic vineyards near the town of Todi in the Umbria region of Italy. Sagrantino is a grape that is indigenous to Umbria. Umbria is a landlocked area south of Tuscany and about 90 miles north of Rome. Cantina Roccafiore is a family owned certified organic, modern winery and vineyard founded in 2000. The Prova D’Autore is aged for 24 months is smaller French oak barrels, then aged an additional 6 months in the bottle. The alcohol content is 14%.

The color is deep, nearly opaque, crimson red. The nose is dark and brooding, ripe dark berries, cinnamon stick, spice, leather, dark chocolate, sort of a wine version of a man’s cologne. This a full-bodied, bold, dry wine, with rich flavor and solid structure. It tastes of blackberry, plum, licorice, spice and blueberry. The mid-palate offers black cherry, Dove chocolate and tart cranberry. This wine starts with a soft mouth-feel that gains complexity as the flavors develop. The tannins are well-integrated with the body of the wine. The finish is full and long.

The Roccafiore Prova D’Autore 2012 is an excellent, delicious taste of Umbria. For the website, I have been drinking a lot of “brand” wines lately. Brand wines have greatly improved in the last few years, but they are basically designer wines, created to produce a certain effect and appeal to a certain audience. The Prova D’Autore delicious, well-made and a welcome change from brand wines. These are the grapes grown on their property and turned into wine in the style of their choosing, this wine tastes like a modern Italian wine grown and created in Umbria. There is a sense of place and history in the bottle that just cannot be duplicated elsewhere.
