Saviah Cellars The Jack Riesling 2012

saviah_cellars_the_jack_rieslingThe 2012 Saviah Cellars The Jack Riesling is sourced from two contracted vineyards, Evergreen vineyard, which is one of Milbrandt’s properties (if you are into Columbia Valley wine, Milbrandt’s vineyards will come up often) located in the Ancient Lakes AVA and Elerding vineyard located in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA and both within the larger Columbia Valley AVA in Washington. Saviah Cellars is a small, family owned winery, founded in 2000 and many of their wines are sold thru mailing lists. The Jack Riesling is part of the value line and while a small production wine, 1,500 cases, sells for around $13. This Riesling is fermented and aged in stainless steel vats and the alcohol content is a reserved 11.9%.

The color is almost clear. The nose is honey, citrus, apple and pear. This is a silky, slightly sweet (nectar sweet, not sugar sweet) Riesling. It has solid, very natural flavors, apricot, melon, green apple, pear and a splash of peach, with a nice brush of minerality showing up on the mid palate. There is excellent length to the flavors, the acidity is mild and the finish is full and long.

The Saviah Cellars The Jack Riesling is a very easy to like wine, well made and very tasty. It is a Riesling that beginning wine drinkers can easily understand, but it will still appeal to more advanced drinkers. The touch of sweetness and the rich, but balanced citrus and fruit flavors will nicely compliment the Easter ham and it can double as an aperitif for after the meal.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
