Salomon Undhof Hochterrassen Grüner Veltliner 2012

The family owned Salomon Undhal winery has been in operation since 1792 and they have some of the best vineyard locations in AustriaGrüner Veltliner is THE grape of Austria and Salomon Undhof produce classic examples of this wine for 222 years. The Hochterrassen Grüner Veltliner is sourced from several vineyards and is intended as the “everyday” Grüner, it should be priced between $10 and $15.

The color is almost clear, just a hint of yellow. The nose is honey and fresh fruit, peach and lemon with a hint of spice. The wine is bright and alive and has a syrupy mouthfeel. It tastes lean and clean with flavors of peach, Anjou pear, lemon and citrus, with a light brush of minerality. The flavors are well mingled and impressively balanced. This is a dry wine, the peach and the pear add a touch of nectar sweetness and is well complemented by the tart citrus and the acidity, while the minerality and slight hint of spice add complexity.

The 2012 Salomon Undhof Hochterrassen Grüner Veltliner is an excellent summer wine, versatile and delicious. If you are not familiar with Grüner Veltliner grape, the Hochterrassen is a great place to start, it is a classic, real deal, well priced Grüner.
