2006 Abrazo Del Toro Reserva Red

Imported by Trader Joe’s and made exclusively for the American market. The Abrazo Del Toro (Hug of the Bull) is 34% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot grapes sourced from the Carinena Region of Northeast Spain, the winery is Bodegas Anadas. Robert Parker gave the Abrazo Del Toro 87 points, Trader Joe’s sells it for $6.99. The alcohol content is 13.5%.

The color is a very dark, almost black, red with a salmon pink halo around the edge. The nose is dark fruit,  cut grass, a little vanilla and carmel corn. Medium bodied with smooth, balanced flavors of cherry, raspberry and blueberry with some milk chocolate and vanilla thrown in. After 4 years of aging, the tannins and oak are very well behaved. There is a decent, though nothing out of the ordinary, berry and chocolate finish.

Another solid, under 7 buck, Trader Joe’s Spanish wine. TJ’s imported wines have a better track record than their US offerings, the American stuff is either a very cool bargain or a complete bust, the imported wines tend to by very solid and very cheap. The Abrazo Del Toro Reserva Red can be a candidate for your go-to cheap every day wine, a quality sipper and would pair with a wide assortment of beef, pork and chicken dishes.
