2008 Estancia “Keyes Canyon Ranches” Merlot

The Estancia Merlot is sourced from grapes grown in the Keyes Canyon Ranches Vineyards, Paso Robles, California. 90% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Syrah (just add Cabernet Franc and you have your classic Bordeaux blend), the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for 12 months, 20% of the barrels are new. The alcohol content is 13.5%.

The color is a very pretty, crystal clear, see thru ruby red. The nose is a bit tight, it gives up some plum, a little blackberry and a hint of cedar. Soft plum and tart cherry upfront, followed by dark chocolate, raspberry and not sweet strawberry. A smooth, silky, but slightly watery mouthfeel. Light on tannins and the oak is well integrated, there is mild sweet vanilla and it only makes its presence known on the finish. The finish is plum and vanilla, it too is slightly watery, but it last a very long time.

A very easy to like Merlot and well priced, I found it for $11. Good tasting, decent structure, well made, reasonably priced, that is the definition a good wine. If you have been staying away from Merlot’s lately, you might want to try this one.
