Hyatt Wine – Canvas

Canvas is the wine label for the in house wines you will find at any Hyatt hotel. The Michael Mondavi family developed the Canvas wines for Hyatt. I’m a frequent guest at the Hyatt and I’ve had the privilege of tasting their wines on a few different occasions.

The Hyatt has a great points and award system for its frequent guests. Once you have achieved diamond status, as I have, you can choose to have them send up a bottle of wine when you check in. All complimentary of course. If you’re lucky they will sometimes include fruit and cheese with the wine.

I’ve tried both the Cabernet and the Merlot. I tried the Merlot in January of last year and I mostly just remember that I liked it. A had two of my closest friends with me on that trip and they liked it as well.

I wrote down my tasting notes from the 2006 Cabernet I had just a week ago. Overall I’d score the wine a 84. I read the tasting notes from the back of the bottle and just couldn’t imagine how they came up with their description. I found the Cab to be very sweet and fruit forward, with strawberry and a little oak. It is light bodied for being a Cabernet and has little or no finish to it. Its a somewhat simple wine with an alcohol level of 13.5%. Its a wine that I would enjoy drinking by itself.

Next time you are at the Hyatt and in mood for wine I’d say its safe to give their Canvas label a try. If I was presented with more options I’d be tempted to look another way. You can now buy these Canvas label wines online at Noble Merchants
