Trumpeter Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
November 8, 2008 by ramsay
I’m a big fan of Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina but this wine needs careful consideration. It is potentially a incredible value for less than $10.
This wine has a big nose and lots of flavor but is very high in tannins. Just a quick lesson in tannins – they are often that bitter taste you get at the end of the wine. In the case of the Trumpeter Cabernet 06 they are very heavy, lots of tannins. Over time the tannins will eat up the oxygen left in the bottle and evolve into a very silky component of the wine. Given that this wine already has so many great characteristics this wine can become even better over time. Now on to the aroma and taste…
On the nose of this wine (Thanks to Amy for tasting this wine with me) we got cherry, raspberry, leather slight spice or pepper and other dark fruit. Wow what a nose! We tasted ground up cherries and more dark fruit. We were also met with the high tannis that I mentioned earlier that made this wine a little to young. Its my opinion that it just needs more time before its ready, but still a good wine. If you can wait, buy it now. Wines that are rated 90+ and sell for less than $10 do not stick around long.
