Cheap 2005 Bordeaux

So you’ve heard all the rage about how great the 2005 Bordeaux wines are and you are looking to find some for yourself.  Maybe you would like to find some for a cheap price like me.  Before you do, be ready to get what you are paying for.

2005 was an epic year for the Bordeaux wines.  The thing is, everyone already knows it.  Many people bought into these wines early on knowing they would increase in value.  Since the time they have been released many have increased in value by 30-100%.  Bordeaux’s age very well and they attract wine collectors and investors.

As you should already know, I like to find good wine at cheap prices.  So I went looking for some cheap 2005 Bordeaux.  I knew that most of them have already been driven up in price and at this point, a cheap 2005 Bordeaux is one that sells for less than $50.  I bought three wines…

2005 Clos Du Marquis Saint Julien – $55
2005 La Patache Medoc – $8.99
2005 Chateau Tour St Joseph Haut-Medoc – $19.99

I bought the first two wines at Costco and the Chateau Tour St Joseph from my local totalwine.

I haven’t tried the first wine, the Clos Du Marquis.  I’m going to age that wine and drink it 10 years from now.  I did try the other two wines and was very disappointed.  The Chateau Tour St Joseph was fruity but had no finish and overall just wasn’t that good.  The La patache was smokey and dry but also did not sit well with me.

Cheap 2005 Bordeauxs are not always a bargain.  Sometimes you will just be getting what you are paying for.  My experience is that the good 05′s have already shot up in value and if you want a good 05 you are going to have to raise your price point.  Read the reviews and do your homework before buying.  And if you are buying them as an investment make sure you try what you are investing in before you start buying cases.
