This past weekend I got to attend the Virginia Wine Festival held at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Northern Va. Tickets were only $25 at the door which I thought was a very fair price.
It seemed like there was at least 50 Virginia wineries in attendance. Not a bad showing for a wine festival in Virginia. Virginia is one of the best of the other 46 states when it comes to wine. There are many different varietals produced from Virginia. Just about every white and red grape you can think of can be grown there.
If you have never been to a wine festival in your state I encourage you to go. You don’t have to be a wine expert to have fun. In fact you don’t need to know anything about wine at all. Once you get in the door and have your tickets you head over to the wine glass table or booth where they are handing out wine glasses. Once you have your glass you are all set. You can walk up to any winery booth and try their wine. Don’t be afraid to ask questions as the staff usually is very knowledgeable and willing to help. You can find local wine events in your area at localwineevents.com.
Overall I guess I just didn’t try that many good wines. I’ve always enjoyed the Virginia whites but I have a hard time with the reds, especially the Cabernet Franc. From what I hear there are a lot of great Cabernet Francs produced in Virgina but most of the ones we tried on Saturday had a metallic and aluminum finish that no one was enjoying. I did enjoy (and buy) the chilled Norton from Chrysalis. Overall though we really enjoyed the Virginia Wine Festival. It was a great way to spend the day.
