The Frontera Pinot Noir is 100% Pinot Noir non vintage wine sourced from vineyards in the Southern Region of Chile. Most Chilean wines you see on the store shelves are sourced from Chile’s Central Valley. The Southern Region sees more rainfall and has a cooler growing season, which is just the conditions Pinot Noir vines need to thrive. Frontera is the largest selling line of Chilean wines in the US and is one of Concha y Toro’s labels. Concha y Toro has been in business since 1883 and is one of the leading wineries in the world. This is a “drink it now” Pinot Noir, it receives no oak aging, after fermentation the Pinot is aged for 4 months in stainless steel tanks before bottling and shipping out. The alcohol content is 12.5%.
The color is a dark crimson red with black cherry highlights. The nose is a little musty, with dried cherry, spearmint chewing gum and red berries. This is a soft, fresh fruit forward Pinot Noir, with medium to light body and a hint of herbs on the mid palate. It tastes of non sweet Maraschino cherries, fresh strawberry, red Twizzlers (again just the flavor not the sweetness) and hit of tart cranberry. The mid palate adds some mild herbal tea and a little POM Wonderful. The acidity gives the Pinot Noir a bright feel and the tannins are hidden in the mix. The finish is subdued but does linger for a while.
The Frontera Pinot Noir is a tasty, fruit forward, light summer Red wine. I have seen the Frontera selling on the internet from $3.99 to $9.99, with most in the 7 buck range. At that price it is a very solid and useful hot weather wine, this is not a wine that you would pair with steak or BBQ, but is plenty tasty enough to hold its own with chicken, pasta and seafood. Though not a thought provoking Pinot Noir with layers upon layers of flavor and texture, it is a wine that drinks nicely, will add to a well chosen meal and won’t break the bank.
