The Alex Elman Bin 721 NBM Italian Vintner’s Choice is a blend of 70% Nebbiolo, 20% Barbera and 10% Merlot (or 721 NBM) grown in vineyards in Barolo, Piedmont and Chianti, Tuscany. The Nebbiolo grape when grown in the Barolo DOCG makes Barolo Red wine (The Nebbiolo used here is sourced from vineyards in Barolo). Barolo is to Italy, is what Cabernet Sauvignon is to Napa and Bordeaux Reds are to France, top shelf, age worthy wines, that get big points in the leading Wine magazines. This is a non vintage wine and also a non DOCG, DOC or IGT designated wine, even though the grapes are grown in some of the finest wine regions in the world. The grapes used in the 721 NBM are sustainably farmed and organic, no man-made chemicals are added, they use natural yeasts to induce fermentation and the wine sees no oak barrels or oak flavoring. The alcohol content is 13%.
Alex Elman is the importer and her line of wines (currently wines from Italy and Argentina) reflect her palate, her experience and her idea of what makes an “honest” wine. Alex lost her eyesight when she was in her 20’s, but that did not seem to slow her down much. The label shows the name of the wine written in braille and the illustration on the label features her in a vineyard with her service dog, Hanley.
The color is a perfectly clear, see-thru, cherry red. The nose is soft and delicate, cherries and spice, a little chocolate cocoa powder and savory herbs. There is a full rich mouthfeel and the wine shows really good length. It starts off with a little tart/a little sweet cherry, blueberry, non fizzy cola, milk chocolate and blood orange. The mid palate shows off the tannins, they do not bite or get in the way but they really hold their place in the wine, along with tart cranberry with a splash of herbal tea. The acidity is very well balanced and the finish is strong and long (the flavors just stay with you, until the next sip).
There are many reasons to drink a bottle or three of the Alex Elman Bin 721 NBM, experiencing Nebbiolo grown in Barolo for under $16 ( I am not sure of the price, Amazon has it for about $12.50), enjoying a value wine produced to the specifications of a talented wine professional or drinking a bottle because it is just flat out delicious. The Bin 721 NBM is a full flavored, fairly large Red wine, but it drinks lighter, it goes down easy. The Alex Elman Bin 721 NBM is value Red wine done right.
