2010 Comoloco Monastrell

comoloco-448671The 2010 Comoloco (translates to “like mad”) Monastrell is 100% Monastrell sourced from a single vineyard from Jumilla in Southeastern Spain. Comoloco is made by Bodegas Juan Gil, a noted maker of Monastrell and Monastrell is the main grape of the Jumilla DO. Monastrell is also know as Mourvedre and Mataro and is the M in GSM blend wines. This is classified as a Young wine, which means when the fermentation is complete, they do not age the wine, it goes to straight to the bottle. So while none of the rough edges are softened by age, none of the bright fresh flavor is reduced either. The alcohol content is 14%.

The color is a dark black cherry with a pink halo. The nose is cherry and plum, a light floral touch and a dusty Nestle cocoa powder. It starts out with jammy raspberry, cherry with a wallop of Altoids spice. The fruit is big and bright enough to go toe to toe with the spice. The mid-palate freshens things up with juicy black and blueberry. There is a nice sharp edge to the tannins, they don’t bite or get in the way, but the stake out their place on the flavor profile. The finish is soft and fades fairly quickly.

The Comoloco Monastrell is a fine change of pace wine, it does not taste like the same old thing. The dark fruit and spice mix well, the label is cool and the price is low, I found it for under 8 bucks. Would pair well with roast or grilled meat or just drink it on a cool fall night.

Don’t tell anyone, but there is absolutely no correlation between the cost of wine and the quality of wine.
